Thoughts on Randall E. Auxier, "Royce's "Conservatism'"

James A. Good, North Harris College

In the following comments, I focus on the political taxonomy that Randall Auxier (45–48) borrows from Aaron G. Fortune, because I believe the appellation "conservative" only applies to Royce as long as that term is defined rather broadly. Auxier was kind enough to send me a paper by Fortune, who recently wrote a dissertation under his direction, and I will occasionally refer to Fortune's paper, "Three Levels of Belief Formation in Political Thought." I will also suggest that it might be more interesting to consider Royce's political thought as a variant of the classical republican tradition.
