The
Pluralist: An Editorial Statement
Randall E. Auxier, Southern
Illinois University Carbondale
We are pleased to devote a
portion of our second volume to the life and work of Elie Maynard Adams
(19192003). Adams was an opponent of pluralism (although he did not define
the concept as we do in this journal), but he was a fine apologist of
the value of persons, and his personalist stance brings his thought well
within the historic mission of our journal; indeed, we greatly appreciate
his contribution to moral philosophy and celebrate herewith a fine philosophical
life. Warren Nord has done a masterful job of summarizing Adams’s philosophical
viewpoint, and we wish to thank a former student of E. M. Adams, who wishes
to remain anonymous, for his support in helping us bring this tribute
into print.
