Deep Pluralism

AFTER SOME DECADES IN WHICH pluralism was taken for granted as the wave of the future—at least in academic circles—a reaction has set in. This reaction rightly sees that many formulations of pluralism lead to a debilitating relativism. There is some danger that the baby will be thrown out with the bathwater. It is imperative that intellectual and cultural life not only recognize that there is diversity but also appreciate and celebrate that diversity. How is this to be done in such a way that our lives are enriched, our convictions deepened, and our relationships among diverse groups enhanced?
