AFTER SOME DECADES IN WHICH
pluralism was taken for granted
as the wave of the future—at least in academic circles—a reaction has
set in. This reaction rightly sees that many formulations of pluralism
lead to a debilitating relativism. There is some danger that the baby
will be thrown out with the bathwater. It is imperative that intellectual
and cultural life not only recognize that there is diversity but also
appreciate and celebrate that diversity. How is this to be done in such
a way that our lives are enriched, our convictions deepened, and our relationships
among diverse groups enhanced?
